We forget, or perhaps are unaware that these constructions are rooted in colonialism and the violent eradication of *the wild* and its inhabitants. These constructions of 'nature' + 'wilderness' not only reinstate this erasure but further allow us to see nature as something distant, to be pushed to the back of our minds. Within environmental management we hear a lot about the preservation of these places national parks for example. But it is clear that it is not the environment that needs management, but we people who need managing. This perceived distance between 'nature and our western lifestyles, keeps us ignorant, exploiting nature and its resources....it is about time we start appreciating our local wildness: the urban pigeons, foxes and trees, and most of all the wildness in and of ourselves.
