It also serves a purpose: a flat foot on clear glass shows every scratch from the table, and a cut star breaks up the light so wear never reads. The sawtooth rim is the opposite kind of decision, pure risk, because every point is a place the piece can chip and a cutter who ran the wheel too deep ruined the blank at the final stage.
