The story of Shuggie a soft, lonely soul growing up in 80s Glasgow, Scotland in public housing caring for his unpredictable, deeply flawed mother, Agnes. I had heard that Glasgow was a rugged place in the 80s but Stuart shows how Imperialism, the economic depression attendant looks and feels with immense humanity and obviously in moving prose. There's nothing cheesy or indulgent about Shuggie Bain - it's heartbreakingly real. A queer coming of age story that is an absolute must read.
